HISTORY OF COLLEGE : |
|
| |
The Latthe Education Society, the parent body of the Narayandas Sarwottamdas Law College was established in 1951 with the object, of providing facilities for the education in various faculties one among which was legal education. In pursuance of that object this college was established in June 1969 with the active, sincere and kind Co-operation of the members of Sangli and Taluka Bar Association. The college was started as an evening college with "Three year law course".
An eminent and renowned lawyer of this area Advocate, K.A. Chougule graced the chair of Principal. He is our founder Principal. As there was no grant from the Government our college was not having full time lecturers. All the renowned advocates of Sangli were kind enough and extended their great Co-operation as teaching faculty of this institute as Honorary lecturers.
In this new era of rapid development, old ideas in all sciences are being modified and new concepts are being established in every field of life. The legal field is not an exception. Accordingly, curriculum of the course has to be revised so that the law student would be conversant with the latest trends and developments, keeping this in view, five year law course was introduced by the bar council of India from June 1983 after the completion of higher secondary school certificate examination (10+2). Our college also started this 5-year law course from the same year when Bar Council of India introduced it. Both the three-year law course and five-year law course are running simultaneously.
Our college authorities took into consideration the needs of changing society and persons wanting to be professionals in taxation laws, we introduced a diploma course known as "Diploma in Income tax and Sales tax" from the academic year 1984-85. It is a self-financing course. Right from the beginning there is excellent response for this diploma of one-year duration. For last two years we are compelled to close the admission as our seats limitation is coming to an end according to the rules of the Shivaji University.
Our college was not having independent building for want of funds, and law study did not receive grant-in-aid from the state. Out college functioned from the neighboring commerce college building, which is also run by our parent body Latthe Education Society. It was dream come true when President of our Governing Council of our parent body; Latthe Education Society and also Chairman of local managing committee of our college late Shri. K.A. Chougule, Advocate, laid the foundation stone in the year 1984 for the construction of our college building. With the precious corpus of Rs. 2.5 lacs created and kept by our ex-principal Shri.A.R. Ghode, advocate, as a building fund, the construction of college building began. Soon the donations started coming in from various institutions and corporate bodies such as municipal council, Banks, industries and not the least of our past students. During the construction of our college building our parent body Latthe Education Society stepped in with funds whenever we faced shortfall as we have not received any development grants from UGC. It was momentous for us in the history of our college when we shifted to our very own building in the year 1998 as full-fleshed day college.
The law governs every aspects of everyday life of every citizen. The study and knowledge of law to the society is as vital as breathing and water to human body. Yet there was no grant-in-aid for legal education. The demands were aired in unison from the year 1979 for grants-in-aid for legal education. Unfortunately the Government of Maharashtra stonewalled to this demand. So Mr. M.P. Vashi, Advocate, and member of Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in the High Court at Mumbai on behalf of Maharashtra law teachers association filed a writ in 1985. The writ was allowed, directing the state to give grant-in-aid to law colleges in Maharashtra. Government of Maharashtra in the Supreme Court of India challenged the said decision of Hon'ble High Court, Mumbai. The principal of our college Shri. V.T. Chougule played a vital role in collecting the information, documents and statistics etc and filing a detailed affidavit in Supreme Court of India. Based on the facts of the documents, Government's own resolutions and notifications, it was pointed out how the faculty of law which was so important, was neglected for grant-in aid. The facts set out in the affidavit of our principal form the major part of the judgment of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court not only dismissed the Special Leave Petition of Government of Maharashtra but also declared the position of law that providing legal education is the responsibility of State under the constitution. The decision not only benefited our college but also almost all the law colleges in Maharashtra were benefited by the said judgement. Thus, since academic year 1995-96 the Government of Maharashtra is compelled to extend the grant-in-aid scheme to all the law colleges including ours. |
